House Alive News — January 2012

Happy New year!

It has been an exciting start of the new year for House Alive. We are in the middle of giving our website a make-over. The new site will make it easier for people to find information, have new updated photo galleries and help people to make natural building more a part of their lives. We will let you know as soon as the website is done.

As always, there is a lot of interest in our workshops, and in particular in our apprenticeships. More and more people want to be empowered to house themselves at a reasonable cost and in a way that nurtures themselves as well as the natural environment. The apprenticeship only has a few spots left, apply now to be considered for this year’s program!

We have some other great workshops too, if you can’t make time for a full apprenticeship:

April 29 – June 8 – 6 Week Natural Building Apprenticeship
June 17 – July 7 – Complete Shelter Workshop
August 12 – 18 – Everything Cob

Check out our online schedule to learn more about these incredible programs.

We now have a presence on Youtube with the movie “Cob, the dvd”. You can watch this pictoral in 3 parts, explaining cob with easy-to-understand language and beautiful pictures. Watch part 1 now!

We are planning on doing our first Webinar on February 15, at 7 o’clock PST (sorry, New York!). This is a chance for people to get a better understanding of natural building and how it manifests itself at House Alive. It will be an 45 minute presentation on 3 basic issues related to cob building that are so often on people’s minds:

  1. The cost of cob buildings
  2. The speed of cob construction
  3. Cob and building codes

There will be time after the presentation for Q&A.

2 more Webinars are planned for later in the Spring. Theses educational opportunities are completely free, although donations can made through PayPal and are appreciated. We will send out a reminder and some instructions on how you can be part of this event soon.

This coming Sunday Coenraad will be doing a presentation on the cob building he and the apprentices built in South Dakota. The presentation is part of an evening on sustainable design at the Standing Stone Brewery in Ashland Oregon. The format for the event is called Pecha Cucha, a Japanese concept where each presenter gets to show 20 slides and only 20 seconds to talk about each one. I’ll have to get to the point, I guess…!

Last but not least, find (and “Like”) us on facebook for another way to stay connected with your dreams of natural housing.

May 2012 bring you hope, joy and love!
